Athens, known as the cradle of democracy and philosophy, is a city alive with history, culture, and energy. I have been visiting yearly since I was a little girl, as we have a holiday home about an hour from the city. From the majestic Parthenon to the lively streets of Monastiraki, there’s an abundance of experiences awaiting you. Join me as I share my insider tips to make your journey through Athens unforgettable!

Witness the Changing of the Guards

One of the most iconic experiences in Athens is the changing of the guards at Syntagma Square. This ceremonial event happens every hour on the hour and is truly captivating. Don't make this a main thing, but when you are in the neighbourhood, shopping on the Ermou street, or getting lunch at Zonar's, try to squeeze it in. If you like spectacle, don't miss the grand Sunday ceremony at 11 AM, when the square fills with tourists and locals. The tradition and craftsmanship behind this tradition is truly beautiful.

The precise movements and traditional attire of the Evzones, the guards, create a picturesque scene. Arrive a few minutes early to snag a good viewing spot. This experience offers a slice of Greek tradition against the backdrop of the historic Greek Parliament.

Explore the Acropolis Museum

After enjoying the guards, make your way to the Acropolis Museum. This modern marvel displays over 4,000 artifacts from the Acropolis and provides context for your exploration of the ancient site. The museum dazzles visitors with its architecture and exhibits, making it a must-visit in Athens.

Don’t overlook the restaurant on the top floor! Offering sweeping views of the Acropolis, it’s the perfect setting for a leisurely lunch or dinner. I enjoyed a delicious meal while watching the sun dip below the iconic Parthenon—an experience that truly stands out.

A Show at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus

If you're visiting Athens, catching a show at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a must. This ancient theater, situated beneath the Acropolis, hosts performances ranging from classical concerts to modern plays. The atmosphere becomes magical during sunset, turning the sky into a stunning backdrop for your evening.

During my visit, I experienced a breathtaking performance as the sun set over the ruins. The energy of the audience and the intimate setting made it a highlight of my trip.

Lunch at Ergon House

If hunger strikes, swing by Ergon House for a tasty lunch. This culinary spot offers a variety of local delicacies and traditional Greek dishes that will tempt any food lover. The ambiance is casual yet stylish, making it an ideal place to recharge from a day of sightseeing.

For a relaxed vibe, head to the rooftop terrace for cocktails. The views of the city are fantastic and the perfect way to unwind after your explorations.

Roaming in Monastiraki

A visit to Athens isn't complete without a stroll through Monastiraki. This lively neighborhood is full of life and charm. With bustling marketplaces and unique shops, you can find everything from leather goods to handmade crafts. It's an excellent spot for souvenir shopping.

Take your time here to explore the narrow streets and discover local treasures. I stumbled into a quaint café where I savored a classic Greek coffee (Frappé) while people-watching—which we all love to do - admit it.

Dining at Kuzina or Savoring Gyros

After all that exploration, treat yourself to a meal at Kuzina, a nearby restaurant offering delightful modern Greek cuisine. The dishes are beautifully presented, and the flavors highlight local ingredients.

If you prefer a more casual meal, indulge in a classic Greek gyros. You can find these delicious wraps all over the city, and they make for the perfect quick bite between activities.

The Best Views in Athens

For breathtaking views, don’t miss Lycabettus Hill. This spot offers the best panoramic views of Athens, and you can avoid the crowds by taking the funicular train to the summit. (Altenative to Acropolis)

The sunsets viewed from here are nothing short of spectacular; you’ll witness the sprawling city against the backdrop of the beautiful Saronic Gulf—a sight that is simply awe-inspiring.

Escape the City at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation

If you need a break from the bustling city, visit the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center and Flisvos Marina. Here, you can enjoy a refreshing sea breeze and beautiful surroundings.

The foundation features lovely gardens, cultural facilities, and a charming café where you can relax. A leisurely stroll along the marina allows you to admire luxurious yachts while soaking up the coastal charm of Athens.
